The Foundation Year paves the road for the next three years of professional study, regardless of the career path you choose to pursue. The first year's curriculum is specifically designed to introduce you to the essential elements of visual thinking that will underpin your creative process. In addition, it provides you with the technical skills required to actualize your conceptual ideas. Two- and three-dimensional coursework and engaging class assignments build a strong skill set and establish a common denominator that defines the - Corcoran educational experience.

During the first year at the Corcoran students will also learn how to take advantage of the extraordinary resources available in Washington. The capital city's rich cultural institutions museums, galleries, theatres, concert halls, public monuments and parks open up a wealth of artistic possibilities. Corcoran faculty lead tours of the collections of the Corcoran, the Smithsonian Institution, The National Gallery, and leading commercial galleries as well as artists' studios.

In addition to taking introductory classes in art history and writing, first-year students explore the Corcoran's primary areas of study Digital Media Design, Fine Art, Fine Art Photography, Graphic Design and Photojournalism. This prepares you to make informed decisions when choosing a major at the end of the Foundation Year. Students may enter the Foundation Year in either the fall or spring semester.
